Building a web site

Your web host will most likely have a simple online tool to help you get started. The easiest way to create web pages from material you have already written is to use Word 97. Simply open the document you want to convert and choose "Save as HTML..." from the file menu.

There are a number of fancy "WYSIWYG" web page editors. If you take the time to learn these, you can produce impressive pages.

I recommend that you learn some HTML. My pages were produced using a text editor called HomeSite, though I often rough out pages in Word 97. HTML is especially useful in WebCT, where you can use it to spice up email and discussion postings.

Remember that like much of the web, these pages were created by professionals (or at least very serious amateurs), often with a graphic design staff. Your students don't expect a professionally produced brochure for your syllabus, my experience shows that they can view your web page the same way. You are primarily providing information.

What information can you provide via a web site?
